Non-Parenchymal Liver Cell Core Services (Research Center for Alcoholic Liver & Pancreatic Diseases and Cirrhosis) - University of Southern California

Summary

The Research Center is supported by grants (P50AA11999, R24AA12885, and T32AA07578) from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and by the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and provides Unique Scientific Services that Supports Scientists around the world. The Center provides unique expertise to the scientific community through its Core Services.

The Non-parenchymal Liver Cell Core provides freshly isolated or cultured Kupffer, hepatic and sinusoidal endothelial cells (KC: hepatic macrophages), hepatic stellate cells (HSC) and sinusoidal endothelial cells (SEC) from normal rats or rat models of liver injury.

Equipment/Services

Price List

The priority of the services will be given to the members of the Southern California Research Center for Alcoholic Liver and Pancreatic Diseases (ALPD) and Cirrhosis. The services are rendered to the qualified members on a charge back basis to recover the costs of supplies which are not supported by the center and resource grants from NIAAA. The services can be rendered to non-members for higher charge backs which include personnel costs and surcharges.
Request for Services                                                                                         1. A request for normal rat KC and HSC.
2. A request for cell isolation services for the disease models.
Notice: We have updated the prices of KC and HSC.
Cell type Center Member
(Non-Member) Average
Yield Guaranteed
yield
Rat KC $150 ($200)/rata 1.8 x 107 cellsb 9.0 x 106 cells
Rat HSC $150 ($200)/rata 5.2 x 106 cellsc 2.6 x 106 cells
a.These charges are based on a whole isolation procedure per rat and not on cell numbers because the cell yield varies. If KC or HSC isolated from one rat are shared, the charges will proportionally be reduced by fraction. For example, if KC separated from one rat is equally distributed to 2 groups, the charge is $75 for each group of Center members and $100 for each group of Non-members.
b. In average, 1.8 x 107 KC are isolated from one rat following gradient ultracentrifugation and adherence on plastic dish.
c. An average yield of freshly isolated HSCs is 3.0 x 107 cells from one rat. After plating on culture dish, an average number of attached HSC is 5.2 x 106 cells per rat.
Cell type Center Member (Non-Member)
Rat Endothelial cells (SEC) $30 ($60)/1 x 106
These charge backs are based on freshly isolated SEC from normal adult rats.
Differential surcharges are placed based on the service priority criteria.

Turn Around Time

Turn around time for Non-parenchymal Core services depends on which type of model you are working with and have requested. Please include scheduling information and questions in your email to Dr. Hide Tsukamoto (htsukamo@usc.edu) when requesting services.

1. A request for normal rat KC and HSC should be made at least 3 weeks prior to the time the cells are needed.

2. A request for cell isolation services for the disease models should be made at least 2 months in advance.

Abstract

Just a friendly reminder that all publications that are supported even in part by the Center should have the following verbiage in the Acknowledgement section of the paper:

"This study was supported (in part) by the Research Center for Alcoholic Liver and Pancreatic Diseases (P50 AA011999) funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism."

Further, if you use any of the Center's four cores (Administrative, Animal, Morphology, and/or Non-parenchymal Liver Cell); please make a specific acknowledgment as shown in the following examples:

"We acknowledge the NIAAA-supported Non-parenchymal Liver Cell Core (R24 AA012885) for providing isolation and culture of non-parenchymal cells/sinusoidal endothelial cells/Kupffer cells/hepatic stellate cells."

"The study was supported by the Research Center for Alcoholic Liver and Pancreatic Diseases (P50 AA011999) funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and its Animal and Morphology Core facilities."

"We also acknowledge the Animal and Morphology Core facilities of the NIAAA-supported Research Center for Alcoholic Liver and Pancreatic Diseases (P50 AA011999) for providing a mouse model of intragastric ethanol infusion and morphological analyses of liver tissues."

Training Grant recipients should also acknowledge their support:

"This study was supported (in part) by the Training Program in Alcoholic Liver and Pancreatic Diseases (T32 AA07578) funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism."
