Vision

ORD will actively create new translational teams, projects and tools requisite for the transformation of our diverse local environment and the success of our CTSI.

Mission

We will achieve this vision by linking novel research opportunities; pilot funding; research expertise, services, and tools; and physical infrastructure in a collaborative, multidisciplinary atmosphere that supports the translation of ideas into innovative products and health interventions.

Leadership

Director
Carlos Pato, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Pato is Franz Alexander Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at USC Keck School of Medicine. He co-leads the Genomic Cohort program, and has an extensive background in genomic and clinical research. He has had extensive leadership experience as an Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, as an Associate Chief of Staff for the VA in Washington DC, and as a program director at NIH. Dr. Pato is a key leader in development of neuroscience research at USC.

Co-Director
Edward Gomperts, M.D.

Dr. Gomperts is Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology and Director of Clinical Research at CHLA. He initiated the CHLA Translational Science Sypmposia, which have evolved into the CTSI Research Development Workshops. Dr. Gomperts has broad experience in academia and industry. He brings to ORD his skills in leadership and project/program development and a broad overview of T1 and early T2 translation in pediatrics.

Co-Director
Steven Jacobsen, M.D.

Dr. Jacobsen is Director of Research and Evaluation at Kaiser Permanente of Southern California (KPSC). He has extensive research experience in chronic disease epidemiology and extensive administrative experience in developing research infrastructure. As ORD Co-director, Dr. Jacobsen will bring research development and the perspective of KPSC researchers and clinicians, help create collaborative projects involving KPSC, and facilitate T2 and T3 research development.

Co-Director
Pat Levitt, Ph.D.

Dr. Levitt is the Chair of the Reserch Development Group (RDG) for ORD. He is Director of Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute; Provost Professor of Neuroscience, Psychiatry & Pharmacy; and Chair, Department of Cell and Neurobiology at USC

Co-Director
Michele Pato, M.D.

Dr. Michele Pato is the Della Martin Chair in Psychiatry and has co-led extensive population genetic studies in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder for over twenty years. As ORD-co-director, Dr. Pato will work with the CTSI Communications Director to develop effective strategies for informing the CTSI research community about available cohort resources, facilitate new collaborations with PIs outside the Genomics Cohort, and develop guidelines for the use of these resources.

Executive Director
Janet Sobell, Ph.D.

Dr. Sobell is the Scientific Director for ORD. She is a highly qualified scientist and a Research Associate Professor, with extensive experience in research development in clinical and translational science, preventive medicine. She will oversee the administration, personnel, policy development, strategic planning, and infrastructure-related matters for the CTSI ORD.
