Name of the project
- LATINO PARENTS' PERCEPTION OF THEIR CHILDREN'S SEVERITY OF ILLNESS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Project abstract/brief description
- Background
Clinicians sometimes question the ability of parents to assess the severity of their childs condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). We surveyed Latino parents to ascertain their assessment of the severity of their childs illness and compared their response with their childs PRISM 3 score and mortality risk.
Methods
We surveyed Latino parents with children admitted to either the pediatric ICU (PICU) or cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) at a childrens hospital within 48 hrs of their childs admission. The survey included questions that focused on demographics and illness severity perception. The survey was translated from English to Spanish and back translated to English. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to investigate whether parents perception of the severity of their childrens illness was associated with the PRISM 3 score and mortality risk. Significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results
65 parents were surveyed between 5/07 and 12/07. 38.5% and 61.5% of parents had children in the PICU and CTICU, respectively. Of the 62 surveys with complete data, 3 (4.8%), 21 (33.9%), and 38 (61.3%) parents perceived their childs illness to be mild, moderate, and severe, respectively. The childrens corresponding PRISM 3 scores and mortality risk for the mild, moderate, and severe groups were: 6.0 6.0, 10.6 9.0, and 14.3 8.4 for the PRISM 3 scores and 1.0 1.2%, 8.4 19.8%, and 28.0 12.7% for the mortality risk. Descriptive results showed a correspondence between the subjective and objective measures of illness severity. Results from the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that PRISM 3 scores and mortality risk were significantly different among the 3 levels of illness severity (p = 0.034 and p = 0.004, respectively), suggesting that Latino parents were able to distinguish the severity of their chidrens illness in the ICU.
Conclusion
Although clinicians sometimes question the ability of parents to comprehend the severity of their childs illness, our study shows that Latino parents appear to accurately assess their childs severity of illness in the ICU.
